Green Home Spaces supports Kent County Fair

Green Home Spaces became a 1st time commercial exhibitor at the 2010 Kent County Fair. This was in direct support of the fair and the 4-H'ers who work hard all year to exhibit their animals, baked goods, arts & crafts, home grown crops, and woodworking projects. Bob Patterson, President, said "We have an Office Manager, Carrie Douthit, whose children are very active in 4-H and the whole family volunteers for many jobs leading up to and at the fair, and an installer, Dave Kelly, whose sister is involved in 4-H and in the sewing project and fashion review at the fair. We felt this was a wonderful way to show our support of both staff members. We are honored to be a part of something teaching our future generations responsibility and respect, and the value of being hard workers. This certainly won't be our last year at the fair." In keeping with Green Home Spaces dedication to being Green, we are impressed with the 4-H program incorporating GREEN education and practices.

Chestertown Goes Green Initiative

Our President, Bob Patterson, has joined the Chestertown Goes Green Initiative. They are hosting Go Green Programs on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Chestertown Town Hall. These informational sessions focus on home and garden practices that are environmentally friendly.

Bob plans to show how to provide cost-effective, scientifically-sound, state-of-the-art solutions for the problems associated with sub-floor spaces and attic spaces. Come hear Bob speak about his passion and learn what you can do as a homeowner to provide the healthiest living conditions possible for you and your family, as well as how to cut those energy bills!

Local Crawl Space Contractor in Chestertown, MD to aid in Ghana

Owner of Green Home Spaces, Bob Patterson, will be traveling to Ghana this year to begin working on this project. As part of the International H2O Collaboration, an alliance between Rotary International and the USAID, the improvements will include long-term water, sanitation, and hygienic projects in Ghana, which is one of three countries selected for the first phase of the collaborative effort.

In Ghana, the alliance will work closely with local governments to provide hygiene training, boreholes, mechanized water systems, and new latrines. An estimated 86,000 people will benefit from the improvements.

Bob will be traveling to Ghana several times this and next year as part of the Chestertown Rotary International H2O Committee. His Ghanaian name is Kwabena. And he is very pleased to be a part of something so important to humanity.

Rotary Exchange

Bob & Lark Patterson have been hosting two men from Italy here via the Rotary International Exchange program. One young man is a gourmet chef, and Bob & Lark have been enjoying some incredible meals he has prepared for them. The group visited Washington D.C. on Monday, toured Chestertown on Tuesday, and today got to visit the world-famous Crumpton Auction. Bob & Lark have been enjoying their company, experiencing some Italian culture, and sharing ours with their guests.

Chestertown Goes Green

On April 13th, Roy Mears and his son, Dusty, will be speaking about small and large home modifications for better energy efficiency as well as practices that can be adopted by residents for greater energy conservation. Roy and Dusty are local builders and renovators of historic homes.

May 18th brings Pam Harris, of Chesapeake Conservation Nurseries, explaining how rain gardens are a beautiful and colorful way for homeowners, businesses and municipalities to help ease storm water problems.

Winter Homeless Shelter

The Chestertown Samaritan Group coordinates a winter homeless shelter from January 1 thru March 31. Local Kent County churches open their sanctuaries to provide temporary sleeping quarters for shelter guests during these cold winter months. Samaritan Group staff and local volunteers provide guests with a warm meal, breakfast and lunch. Green Home Spaces employee Tom Doyle has served with Christ UMC members as the Wednesday overnight volunteer every week during this period since he and his family arrived to Chestertown in 2005. Prior moving to Chestertown Tom coordinated similar activities thru the Carpenters Shelter, and Trinity UMC Alexandria Virginia. Staff Helping with Kent County Public Schools Changes

With the recent changes being made to Kent County Schools, and the pending consolidation, the children of staff members Carrie & Jay Douthit are directly affected. Their daughter and son are both in middle school, and the consolidation is directly affecting middle schoolers. Carrie has been asked to serve as a parent representative on the Middle School Consolidation Scheduling Committee. This committee will be working to consolidate the three middle schools into one middle school, and determining the best daily schedule to incorporate the required state courses. Carrie will be updating this site as information about the committee's work becomes available.

Oyster Fest Fund Raiser for Chestertown Rotary

On Sunday, February 21, 2010, the Rotary Club of Chestertown, Maryland is hosting an Oyster Fest fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation. The Oyster Fest will be held from 4 - 6 pm at Heron Point of Chestertown, 501 East Campus Avenue, Chestertown, MD and is open to the public.

The buffet dinner will include Raw and Fried Oysters plus Oysters Rockefeller, Oyster Stew, Oyster Casserole, Shrimp, Salmon, Crab Cakes, Chicken Marsala, Seafood Newburg, a full salad bar, dessert bar, and much, much more! All proceeds will benefit the Rotary Foundation to support international projects including Haiti relief, world polio eradication, fresh water and sanitation projects in Ghana, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic, and many other international service projects.
